Grains, or cereals, are grasses that are cultivated for the edible components of their fruit seeds. These seeds, also called kernels, are a staple food around the world and provide more food energy globally than any other type of crop. Grains are commonly divided into two subgroups: whole grains and refined grains.
Whole grains contain the entire kernel, which includes the bran, germ, and endosperm. Refined grains have been milled, a process that removes the bran and germ. This gives them a finer texture and extends their shelf life, but it also removes dietary fiber, iron, and many B vitamins.
Common Types of Grains
- Wheat - One of the most consumed grains globally, used in bread, pasta, and more.
- Rice - A staple in many Asian countries, available in varieties like white, brown, and basmati.
- Corn - Often eaten as a vegetable but technically a grain, used in foods like tortillas and popcorn.
- Oats - Commonly eaten as oatmeal, they are praised for their health benefits.
- Barley - Used in soups, beverages, and for making malt.
- Rye - Mainly used for bread and alcoholic drinks.
- Millet - Popular in traditional dishes across Africa and Asia.
