Rockpoet Bob Dylan steht in einer Gasse voller Müllsäcke hinter dem Savoy Hotel in London. Mit unbewegter Miene hält er dem Zuschauer Texttafeln mit Stichworten (»Cue cards«) aus seinem Song Subterranean Homesick Blues entgegen. Sobald das aus dem Off erklingende Lied über die jeweilige Textzeile hinweggerollt ist, wirft er die Tafel vor sich hin. Die handgeschriebenen Texte enthalten zahlreiche Anspielungen, kreative Rechtschreibfehler, Wortspiele und Nonsense-Reime. (Grundkurs Film 3)

Die Tonebene: Vorläufer des Rap Das Lied, Dylans erster Top-40-Hit, zeigt in seinem Werk den Übergang von der akustischen zur E-Gitarre an. Über einen schnellen Bluesrhythmus, der einem Chuck-Berry-Stück entlehnt ist, legt sich der Text wie ein »verbaler Wirbelwind« (Andy Gill). Das Reimschema entspricht einem Gedicht von Robert Browning, rhythmische und textliche Verwandtschaft zeigen sich auch zum traditionellen Folksong Shortnin‘ Bread und zu Taking It Easy von Woody Guthrie / Pete Seeger. Dylans »Talking Blues«-Sprechgesang wirkt heute noch modern, wie ein Vorläufer des Rap. Für den Inhalt war The Subterraneans (1958) von Jack Kerouac eine wichtige Inspirationsquelle, eine Erzählung über die »Beatniks«, jene unkonventionell lebende Gruppe von Schriftstellern, die als Vorläufer der in den 1960er-Jahren aufkommenden Hippies gelten.
