Introduction to New York

New York, often referred to as New York City (NYC) to distinguish it from the state of New York, is the most populous city in the United States. Located at the southern tip of the state of New York, the city is the center of the New York metropolitan area, the largest metropolitan area in the world by urban landmass. With over 8 million residents distributed over about 302.6 square miles (784 km²), New York is also the most densely populated major city in the United States.

Geography

New York City is composed of five boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. Each borough is a separate county of the state of New York. The city and its metropolitan area constitute the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. As a global power city, New York has been described as the cultural, financial, and media capital of the world, and exerts a significant impact upon commerce, entertainment, research, technology, education, politics, tourism, art, fashion, and sports.

History

The city was originally settled by the Dutch and was named New Amsterdam until the English took it over and renamed it New York after the Duke of York (later James II & VII). New York City was the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790, and has been the largest city in the United States since 1790.

New York is a global hub of business and commerce, being a major center for banking and finance, retailing, world trade, transportation, tourism, real estate, new media, traditional media, advertising, legal services, accountancy, insurance, theater, fashion, and the arts in the United States.
