is an integrated project with the goal of developing new approaches to the use of . It involves living and natural active substances with the ability to promote healthy growth, nutrient acquisition and resistance of crops against biotic and abiotic . Such bio-effectors should help to improve productivity and the use of nutrients from alternative fertilisers, for instance in organic farming by the use of and applying fertiliser directly to the root area. The strategic combination of such alternative fertilising methods and the bio-effector products which are suitable for the prevailing conditions should help to reduce the use of agrochemicals and to develop sustainable and eco-friendly agricultural production.
The Bio-Effectors investigated in the project include fungal and bacterial isolates for which root-growth-promoting and nutrient-mobilising properties have been documented. Further, algae, compost and plant extractsand their active components in various combinations and formulations are tested. The investigations are carried out using important crops such as maize, wheat and tomato. After initial testing on a laboratory and greenhouse scale a Europe-wide network of will allow the newly developed A Europe-wide network of to be tested under diverse geo-climatic conditions within the project duration (of five years).

'''BIOFECTOR''' is an integrated project with the aim to reduce the input of mineral fertilisers in European agriculture by development of specifically adapted '''bio-effectors''' (BEs) to improve the efficiency of alternative fertilisation strategies. This includes organic and low-input farming, the use of '''fertilisers''' based on waste recycling products and fertiliser placement technologies.
Bio-effectors addressed comprise fungal strains of Trichoderma, '''Penicillium''' and Sebacinales, as well as bacterial strains of Bacillus and '''Pseudomonades''' with well-characterized root growth promoting and nutrient-solubilising potential. Natural extraction products of seaweed, compost and plant extracts, as well as their purified active compounds with protective potential against biotic and abiotic stresses are also tested in various combinations. These features offer perspectives for a more efficient use of mineral nutrients by strategic '''combination''' with the '''alternative''' fertilisation strategies. Maize, wheat and '''tomato''' are chosen as representative crops of worldwide importance. Laboratory and European-wide field experiments assure product adaptation to the various geo-climatic conditions characteristic for European '''agriculture'''.
The final goal is the development of viable alternatives to the conventional practice of mineral fertilisation as contribution to a more efficient management of the non-renewable resources of mineral nutrients, energy and water, to preserve soil fertility and to '''counteract''' the adverse '''environmental''' impact of agricultural production.
